Well glued to our sofas, we had plenty of time to dream of life after confinement. And how much we want to say goodbye to him – hopefully for good this time.

What’s the one place you can’t wait to go after all of this is done?

That’s a question we asked 16 of Melbourne’s big names, from Mayor Sally Capp to famous street artist Rone, to chef and restaurateur Andrew McConnell (whose restaurants, unsurprisingly, feature prominently in this review. story). As far back as I can remember, I have dined at Flower Drum. Anthony and Jason Lui run such a well-oiled machine, with the best service and Chinese food in Melbourne. I love a long celebration of lunch in their classic dining room.

It is almost impossible to name just one thing that I look forward to doing when restrictions ease, as I am desperate to return to all of my favorite spots around Melbourne. I was however delighted to learn that one of our most legendary rooftop bars, Madame Brussels on Bourke Street, will reopen with new owners. This is one of my favorite places in the whole city for its view and iconic decor. It also proves Melbourne’s ability to regenerate and pirouette through the toughest times. While this is a wonderful place to make a date or go with a group, it is the place I most often visit on my own. The Napier neighborhood is close to my heart not only because the food and service is beyond beauty, but because I have spent many evenings there, alone, by the window, reading, holding a newspaper or working from my phone, thinking about life, ordering a seasonal dish or plate of the day and a glass of wine. In my little corner by the window, I sit for hours. Watching the trees overlooking Napier Street, watching them go from flowers to fall leaves. Twigs bare to bright green.

There is surely no better Italian in Melbourne.

– Via CBR, Marvel has announced “Devil’s Reign: Superior Four”, a linked miniseries by writer Zac Thompson (“Undone by Blood”) and artist Davide Tinto (“Commanders in Crisis”). The comic will see Doctor Octopus forming his own version of the Fantastic Four, made up entirely of versions of himself from other universes. Thompson said he expects “a lot of ego, pride and patronage along the way. As the adventure kicks off with a yearning for Otto’s past as superior Spider-Man, it will also answer questions about Ock’s future in the Marvel U. The series will debut in January, shortly after the debut of “Devil’s Reign” in December.

– CBR also reports that Heavy Metal has partnered with comic and animation company Herø Projects for a new range of original graphic novels and TV and film projects based on Herø’s books in the Heavy Metal studio division . The Onyx line of graphic novels will launch in summer 2022 and will include titles like “The Red” (previously released under the Heavy Metal’s Virus imprint), “Stable,” “The Awakening,” “Remnant and“ Dogma Resistance. ”Click on the link for more details and illustrations.

– By deadline, HBO Max is developing a series based on “Misfit City”, the BOOM! Studio comic book by writers Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith & Kurt Lustgarten, and artist Naomi Franquiz. Created in 2017, “Misfit City” is a series of adventures in the vein of The Goonies, who follows a group of girls who discover a pirate’s treasure map. Popular screenwriters Hannah Hafey and Kaitlin Smith will serve as the show’s creators and executive producers, alongside Smith and Lustgarten.

– While promoting the 4K release of the premier Addams Family film, director Barry Sonnenfeld has revealed he’s actively developing a Metal Men movie, featuring DC characters created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru. A treatment of history is currently in the works for the project, which Sonnenfeld first focused on in 2012.

– James Gunn revealed he will team up again The suicide squad composer John Murphy on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Murphy succeeds Tyler Bates, who marked the two previous films, as well as Gunn’s To glide and Great. Guardians Vol. 3 will be released on May 5, 2023.

– Netflix has revealed that the original cast of Cowboy Bebop will reprise their roles for the Japanese dub of the live-action series; they also announced that the original anime will begin airing worldwide outside of Japan on October 20. Cowboy Bebop remake will premiere on the streaming service on November 19.

– In other TV news, Kevin Smith announcement the second half of Masters of the Universe: Revelation releases on Netflix on November 23; AMC has given the green light to derivative anthology show Tales of the Living Dead for a first season in six parts in the summer of 2022; and Fate Patrol Season 3 will air on the Starzplay streaming service in the UK on Sunday 14 November.

– Dr. Seuss Enterprises and ComicMix settled a dispute over the inspiration of Seuss from the latter Star Trek parody, Oh, the places you will boldly go! The two publishers have agreed that ComicMix will no longer publish the book, while Seuss Enterprises drops any claims for damages or legal fees. ComicMix editor Glenn Hauman said the deal came about because artist Ty Templeton was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer earlier this year.

– Maia Kobabe’s “Gender Queer” graphic memoir has been banned from the libraries of Brevard Public Schools in Florida. BPS Superintendent Dr Mark Mullins said “staff immediately agreed that this book violated our guidelines,” but it is not clear whether it was referring to its sexually explicit content or not. The book had previously been withdrawn pending review by high school libraries in Fairfax County, Va., Last month, prompting criticism of parents who opposed the book for falsely claiming it ‘it contained sex with minors and student objections to homophobic talking points that emerged during the debate.

– Finally, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner has passed away at the age of 58. Goldner had been battling prostate cancer since 2014 and had only taken medical leave on Sunday. Former IDW Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall homage paid, stating: “Goldner was a nice, approachable guy to someone at his level, and a great CEO for Hasbro. Among all the rest, Brian has always been an enthusiastic champion of the projects we have produced in partnership with Hasbro’s Pub group. Really sorry to hear of his passing. “Goldner is survived by his wife Barbara and their daughter Brooke.

IF I told you that a word that you regularly use to describe me is derogatory to me, would you stop using that word, or would you continue because you have “always” used that word to describe people who look like me? ?

I ask because words evolve and most of the time people understand evolution and change their vocabulary accordingly.

For old fools like me who grew up in the last century, you could have told me in the 1970s how gay you were and I would have perfectly understood that you meant you were happy. Yet if you said that today, it would mean something different, right?

The word and the world have changed, haven’t they? You have also changed the way you use this word.

However, for some reason, it seems difficult for some Malaysians to change their ways when it comes to using the following words: keling, keling kuai.

We Indians have heard these words used to derisively describe ourselves for many years by our fellow Malaysians.

This time the K word was used in a Facebook post by user Burhan Che Rahim to denigrate young Malaysian badminton player Kisona Selvaduray, 23, who is preparing for the Paris Olympics in 2024, after having won gold at the 2019 SEA Games and six World Badminton Federation titles since 2017.

Burhan, who turned out to be Bersatu Pasir Puteh vice-president Borhanuddin Che Rahim, made the comment after World 62nd Kisona lost their Sudirman Cup matches.

Kisona went on to win a bronze medal with a spirited young Malaysian side surpassing their standings and finishing third with South Korea last weekend.

Her father, retired policeman A. Selvaduray, 61, told The Star that the remark not only disparaged his daughter, but the Indian community as well.

“My daughter is both embarrassed and emotionally upset by this remark.

“I hope the police will investigate the individual,” he said.

Selvaduray, who filed a police report yesterday, told the newspaper he was at his home on Saturday when he learned that a Facebook user posted the remark.

Borhanuddin has since resigned as vice president and apologized to “all Malaysians” who were affected.

Many other anti-racists denounced these remarks and several police reports were drawn up.

There was a time when the K word came with less baggage, referring to the Kalinga kingdom, King Chola, the Kapitan of the Indian community of Penang, etc.

Today most Indians take it as an insult, because if you read between the lines you will see in most contexts that it is no longer a neutral word but has taken on a pejorative meaning.

Some people might ask you why are you so sensitive about this, “it’s not like we use the N word on you”.

Inspired by this, Dhinesha Karthigesu, a young Malaysian Indian, took part in an art project last year that attempted to reclaim the word, much like the black community reclaimed the N word in the United States.

He printed a T-shirt with the words: “I am also a Keling” and walked through Kuala Lumpur for “the looks, the displeasure and the bewildered glances at the people”.

He only realized the extent of the negative reaction when his mother saw him in a T-shirt.

In an article he wrote for Vice, he said, “I didn’t fully understand the generational trauma of the word until I saw my mother’s horrified reaction when I got home.

“She was furious. My mom was so angry and upset that the word was even printed on a t-shirt, and more, that I would consider wearing one.

“It’s hard to understand how a word can inflict damage until it’s actually used against you,” he wrote.

There is no doubt about the contemptuous derision of Burhan’s now deleted FB post in which he wrote in Malay: “BAM has snatched this Indian (Keling) from what area to become the main player in Malaysia?”

Despite the K word, the reference to the succession, suggesting a place back, added insult to injury.

Many Indians were brought to Malaysia by the British as indentured laborers to work in fields, where they held low-paid jobs with limited social mobility.

However, rubber plantations were also the driving force behind Malaysia’s economic progress from the early to mid-1900s.

So the Indian community is livid at this remark addressed to the estates, where their ancestors helped to lay the foundation for the economic success of modern Malaysia.

It might take some time for the community and other anti-racist Malaysians to cool down.

Meanwhile, it is clear that most languages ​​offer more polite descriptions of Indians.

For example, Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka recently changed the dictionary definition of “thambi” (strictly speaking, younger brother, but also colloquially used to refer to young Indians) by removing Keling and replacing it with India (from “panggilan untuk Orang Keling yang lebih muda “to” panggilan untuk Orang India yang lebih muda “).

In Cantonese, for example, I learned in the 1970s that the polite way to refer to Indians is to say: ‘Yan Tou Yan’, but some local Cantonese speakers still refuse to use it.

In Mandarin, the polite usage is Indu Ren.

I once had a conversation in a pub with an older Hokkien speaking acquaintance who used to call Indians Keling kuai and after I spoke to her stopped using kuai.

Despite my protests, he is adamant that the K word is OK, because he has always used it and didn’t care if it took on a negative connotation.

So it is to people like him that I am addressing myself, to consider the effect you have by regularly using this once acceptable word.

Please understand that you cannot leave the responsibility of the nearby listener to understand that you did not want to be racist, especially if you are delivering it in a language the listener may not understand, such as Cantonese or Hokkien.

Why not take the advice of the fifth line of the Rukun Negara and just be courteous to your fellow Malaysians by sticking to Indian, Orang India, Yan Tou Yan or Indu Ren?

All we ask is a little respect and understanding as fellow citizens of this beautiful country.

While you are at it, please stop threatening your children to behave by warning them that a nearby random Indian like me is going to kidnap them.

It happened to me recently while I was sitting in a cafe having a drink, so I know it still happens.

There are too many adults who have this irrational fear of Indians programmed into them.

Don’t get me started on the old story that still seems to have some time with some racist parents warning their children that “if you meet an Indian and a snake, kill the Indian first”.

Instead, let’s appreciate together the beautiful tapestry of cultures that is Malaysia and strive to be an example to the world of how people of different backgrounds can live harmoniously together.

We can remember the Sudirman Cup for inspiration from doubles partners Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah.

They fought valiantly for each other, diving for every shuttlecock out of reach, giving it all on the pitch for Malaysia, against opponents who far surpassed them.

This is the kind of semangate that all Malaysians need to stick together, to defeat racists and those who win by dividing us. – October 5, 2021.

At junction 18 of the M62, the motorway changes its name and becomes the M60. After passing the Birch gas station, enter the interior lane.

Follow the sign for M60 (East and South), Manchester and the airport. Follow the left filter lane to merge clockwise onto the M60 motorway. Continue to follow signs for Manchester Airport and at junction 3 of the M60 take both internal lanes and exit the M60 to merge onto the M56.

At junction 2 of the M56, do not follow the Altrincham sign but stay on the M56 following signs for the airport. Do not leave the M56 at Manchester Airport but continue to junction 6. Leave the M56 at junction 6 signposted A538 Wilmslow, Hale, Macclesfield. At the end of the ramp turn left at the traffic lights signposted Hale, Altrincham A538.

Go straight on at the next roundabout. After about 2 miles, approach a traffic light – go straight ahead and take the third right onto Westminster Road. Continue straight for approximately 3/4 mile onto Moss Lane, the soccer field is on the right.

Where is the best place to park?

Altrincham has acquired the use of the Aecom car park for match days. This is FREE and located at 179 Moss Lane, WA15 8FH. Once this is full, it is on-street parking, but please pay attention to the yellow lines or traffic cones prohibiting parking in this area.

Which station is closest to the stadium and what is the approximate distance and walking time?

Altrincham is served by the Metrolink tram system from Manchester City Center, Manchester Piccadilly and Victoria stations.

It is in the Altrincham interchange, a half mile / 12 minute walk. Piccadilly buses also stop at this interchange.

Recommended ads for outdoor fans?

Across from the field is a community gym with an indoor bar that also sells pies, fries, etc.

The Station Hotel (opposite the station….) Is one of the most recommended for outdoor fans.

A short walk along Moss Lane you have the King George pub. A 15 minute walk to town center also gives you plenty of options including Life of Pi and Costellos at Goose Green. You also have the Cheshire Tap on Railway Street and spoons called Unicorn on Ashley Road.

From ghoulish events and Halloween lanterns to tours of historic estates and lazy summer picnics in the park to experience The legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, Sleepy Hollow is full of things to do anytime of the year. If you love history, food, architecture, and nature, you’ll want to put Sleepy Hollow on your list of places to go.

We have been to Sleepy Hollow several times and never fail to find something new and interesting to do. We recommend going there more than once: first for Halloween, then again as part of a visit to the Hudson Valley to enjoy the charm and historic sites at a less crowded pace and quieter. Or do as we did, go there often and every season.

From Washington Irving and The legend of Sleepy Hollow is so important to the city – formerly called North Tarrytown, the city changed its name to Sleepy Hollow in 1996 – we’ll start with the sites related to history.

1. Pay homage to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery

Let’s start with Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. The cemetery is an important element in The legend of Sleepy Hollow and it’s a good place to start your orientation towards the city. Irving is buried in the cemetery. Don’t expect to get too close to Irving’s Grave, it’s protected by a fence. If you visit during the month of October, you will likely find crowds of young people in costumes in the cemetery. In addition to Irving, the cemetery is the final resting place of a number of historical figures, including Andrew Carnegie, Samuel Gompers, Elizabeth Arden and Brooke and Vincent Astor. You will also find memorials for the soldiers of the Civil War.

Pro tip: The cemetery is very large, around 90 acres. It is better to take a map so as not to wander aimlessly. There are also guided tours, especially in October.

2. See the Dutch Reformed Church

Founded around 1685, the Dutch Reformed Church is also present in The legend of Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod Crane was in a mad rush to get to the church before the Headless Horseman reached him. Yet with an active congregation, the church has been in continuous operation since the late 1600s. The cemetery is the burial place of the church.

Pro tip: The church is open for very limited hours on weekends. If you are there when the church is closed, it is still beautiful to see it from the outside. You will see it just before entering the cemetery.

3. Take a photo at the Headless Horseman’s Bridge

Another must-see spot in Sleepy Hollow is the Headless Horseman’s Bridge. If you cross the cemetery, take a detour over the bridge. The bridge over the Pocantico river where Ichabod Crane falls from his horse no longer exists. Despite the lack of historical precision, this bridge is still a scenic spot for a photo or selfie.

Pro tip: If you’re short on time or aren’t a die-hard Irving fan, we recommend skipping this stop.

4. Admire the sculpture of the Headless Horseman

Take a few minutes to snap a photo of the Headless Horseman sculpture. It’s a description of the moment in Irving’s book when the Headless Horseman throws the pumpkin at Ichabod Crane. It’s on Route 9 right across from the Philipsburg Mansion.

5. Experience history at Philipsburg mansion

Stop at the Philipsburg Mansion which also makes an appearance in Irving History. Frederick Philipse arrived in the Hudson Valley in 1653 as a carpenter. His family ended up owning over 50,000 acres in the Hudson Valley. By 1750 the mansion was a working farm that depended on the labor of 23 slaves, making the Philips one of the largest slave families in the northern colonies. The museum now depicts the history of slaves during this period.

6. Visit the Sunnyside Estate

Washington Irving’s Sunnyside Estate is a landmark in Sleepy Hollow. He bought the two-room Dutch house in 1835 and extensively renovated it. Be sure to walk around the grounds to admire the landscaping. You’ll see guides in period costume and learn about what Irving’s life would have been like. The estate is wheelchair accessible.

Pro tip: Although not officially located in Sleepy Hollow, Lyndhurst Castle (mansion) is just 2 miles away. One of the best examples of Gothic Revival architecture, the mansion has 19 rooms and 67 acres of gardens. There are many more historic mansions to see in the Hudson Valley.

7. Spend time in Kykuit

Kykuit was once the home of the Rockefellers. If you love architecture, scenery, art, gardens, or just seeing how the wealthiest people used to live, Kykuit is a must see. You could spend almost a whole day wandering the Kykuit Gardens. The gardens and the sculptures are impressive. Make sure you see the table which had water floating in the middle to pass the dinner dishes.

Pro tips: We recommend good walking shoes for this excursion. You cannot enter Kykuit Park without booking a guided tour and it is best to book in advance. If you have the chance, we recommend the tour which includes the art galleries. It’s an incredible collection. There are other tours that take you into the main house and gardens.

8. Take a walk in the Rockefeller Park reserve

The Rockefeller Park Preserve is a wonderful place for a picnic, a hike, or even a horseback ride. There are wetlands and a lake. If you are a bird lover this is a great place for bird watching. Most of the 55 miles of trails were made by John D. Rockefeller, Sr., and other family members.

Pro tip: Most of the trails are easy, but you still want to have a pair of walking shoes.

9. The Armor-Stiner House (Octagon)

Make sure to stop by the octagonal house to at least take a photo of the exterior. It is now a private residence, although there are tours that you can book in advance. The octagonal house is unique in this sense… It is an octagon. Built in the 1860s, it is like an old classical temple. It is worth seeing from the outside and the inside.

10. Be enchanted by the Union Church of Pocantico Hills

When we are in the Hudson Valley we always try to stop at the church. Technically, it’s in Tarrytown, but it’s a short walk from Sleepy Hollow. It’s such a hidden gem that we have to include it. Henri Matisse created the rose window – it was his last work before his death. Marc Chagall produced the remaining stained glass windows. The church was commissioned by the Rockefeller family, and many have worshiped there over the years.

Pro tip: They do not allow taking pictures indoors, so you will only have to enjoy the experience.

Places to eat

There are plenty of places to eat in Sleepy Hollow and the surrounding towns, including the nearby town of Tarrytown. For farm-to-table and local cuisine, we recommend these four restaurants.

Hudson Farm and the Fish

If you’re looking for a restaurant with great food and great views of the Hudson River in Sleepy Hollow, look no further than Hudson Farm & the Fish. It offers farm-to-table (with Purdy’s Farm and the restaurant owned by the same people), and they also have a full bar, great pizzas, and plenty of craft beers on tap.

JP Doyle restaurant and pub

JP Doyle’s is a local hangout. It’s an Irish pub with comfort food galore. In warm weather, a beer garden is available. It’s also a sports bar, so if you have to watch a game at Sleepy Hollow this is the place to go. JP’s is a short walk from Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and Philipsburg Mansion.

Blue Hill at Stone Barns

For an upscale farm-to-table experience, try Blue Hill at Stone Barns (in 2019, Michelin awarded it two stars). Don’t expect to see a menu. Instead, you’ll experience a chef-chosen multi-course feast based on seasonal produce. We recommend that you take a tour of the farm while you are there. You will need to book well in advance to get a table. Also on site, the Blue Hill Café and Grain Bar is cheaper and much easier to access.

He uses products from the Hudson Valley to create a unique dining experience. It is an ideal setting for a romantic dinner. Goosefeathers is located in Tarrytown House Estate, a lovely place to stay if you are in the area.

If the moodboard on the site is something to pass by, CicciaBella is a place inspired by mortadella and fish scales, tongues and abs, sea foam, party dresses, lemon cheeks and buttocks. So just another Italian restaurant in Bondi then.

But does your Bondi Italian restaurant effortlessly swing between snacks, pasta, and wood-fired oven stuff? Does he pour wine with a natural meager from here and Bel Paese? Is it run by one of the smartest hotel groups in town, home to a kitchen run by one of Sydney’s top chefs and a team that combines common sense with beautiful uniforms? I did not mean it.

Well we could describe Totti, but Ciccia has his own thing. Replacement of pizza and porchetta Da Orazio, CicciaBella is Maurice Terzini and the Icebergs family’s answer to the way we want to eat all summer long. Lighter and healthier, he says, and geared towards snacking and sharing. The space has been reworked to be suller and more adult with concrete details, light boxes, and tie-dye fabric strips that make it feel like a fallout shelter from Rick Owens who just happens to have a exceptional children’s menu.

There’s also a ton of talent: Bella Brutta pizza maker Mitch Westwood is on the wood-fired oven; cocktails are by Matt Whiley from Scout; sommelier James Hird made the wine list; and in the kitchen there is Mitch Orr, the chef who made baloney sandwiches and #notitalian pasta hits at ACME in Rushcutters Bay.

These are the parts, it’s up to you to put them together. Start with antipasti, where the garlic fritta pizza (yes, the fried pizza) serves as the crisp base for a range of one-way snacks. Take the eggplant in sesame oil and temper it with a ball of whipped ricotta. Switch to the tuna crudo punch flipped with Calabrian pepper and liven it up with a plate of beans and edamame. This is a section for double dipping. If it is not for the clams cooked over a wood fire in a spicy tomato sauce, it will be the roasted bone marrow seasoned with garlic, lemon zest and parsley that will bring the osso buco back to basics. . Fritta pizza material for sure.

It is also matter to drink. There are glimpses of seaweed and dashi in the pasta section, but simplicity reigns here too. Fettuccine mixed with kale pesto may land a little watery, but a ragged maltagliati in gravy with a braised rabbit stew and topped with toasted pistachios is masterful – sweet with a sip of vermouth, rich and without a hint of dryness. . No one really cooks rabbit, this dish asks why the hell not.

It’s a menu to discover in the form of snacks one week, pizzette and pasta the next, dishes the next. Whether it’s a salt and vinegar pork chop or a flank steak cooked to medium rare and gravy in reduced balsamic and thyme butter, these main dishes are concentrated and at a reasonable price.

Add desserts that emphasize ease and interest – grapefruit granita with Sichuan pepper meringue here; chocolate custard there; an affogato with amaro coffee – and CicciaBella is as appealing to locals as it is to families as it is to crowds. There might be some stuff we’ve seen before, but not all together and not like this.

Just another Bondi Italian restaurant? Not enough.
