Columbia Falls is a tiny town in Downeast Maine with just 476 residents. To put that into perspective, Portland High School had 908 students enrolled in the 2020-2021 school year, so they had nearly double the number of people living in Columbia Falls under one roof.
This tiny town has big things to consider as there are plans to build the tallest flagpole in the world in what will be called the “Flagpole of Freedom Park”. According to News Center Maine, it would sit on 2,500 acres of land and essentially become a small town that could see 6 million visitors each year.
It’s a bold and ambitious project, and if the City of Columbia Falls decides to incorporate the land, essentially bringing the land under the jurisdiction of Columbia Falls, the city would be responsible for planning the $1 billion flagpole. dollars from Liberty Park. Suddenly, this quiet little town would become much bigger, and not all the locals are in favor of that.
Now, I’m not a resident of Columbia Falls, but I’ll give my two cents on this. If I live in Columbia Falls, I would absolutely say no to incorporation.
I’m all for something that honors veterans, those who died for our country and brings Americans together, but I kind of feel like a NIMBY here. “Not in my garden.” And yes, it’s not technically in my backyard, but isn’t all of Maine really the backyard of everyone who lives here?
I think this project is far too ambitious and takes part of our unspoilt land and turns it into a small town. Doesn’t look like Maine to me. I wouldn’t want the 476 residents of Columbia Falls to end up with this responsibility.
