Migrant worker course applications open

Migrant workers in Taoyuan can register for free Chinese or English conversation instruction classes and life skills classes until July 25, the Taoyuan Labor Department said Wednesday. .

Taoyuan City Government Migrant Workers Academy’s free program, co-organized with National Taiwan Sports University, offers conversation classes in Chinese or English, as well as cooking and education classes financial situation, the department said in a statement.

The language lessons would consist of six four-hour sessions taught by bilingual instructors, focusing on everyday conversation, he said.

The financial education classes would cover issues faced by migrant workers, such as opening bank accounts, exchanging foreign currencies and managing personal finances, in four hours, he said.

The cooking and life skills classes would include 15 three-hour classes focusing on Taiwanese cuisine, general cooking and other life skills, he said.

Migrant workers can apply online, and times and locations will be confirmed after applications close, depending on the number of people who have registered, the department said.

Employers and brokers are encouraged to promote the program and help migrant workers register, the department said.

There were 115,557 migrant workers in Taoyuan at the end of May, according to data from the Ministry of Labor.
