An officer from the Kalamazoo Public Security Department is on administrative leave while state police investigate a shooting involving an officer.
The Kalamazoo Public Security Department said one of its officers shot and injured a man overnight while investigating another nearby shooting incident.
On Friday May 21, at around 2 a.m., an agent from the Kalamazoo Public Security Department (KDPS) was patrolling the Florence and Burrell area, according to a press release from the department.
KDPS agents were in the area due to a shooting in Block 600 in Florence that took place three hours earlier, around 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 20. In this incident, an individual was shot and wounded but refused to provide information or any medical attention refused by KDPS agents.
At the same location where the previous victim was, a police officer heard screams and observed what appeared to be a verbal argument.
Upon arrival at the scene, the officer was informed that one of the parties involved in the dispute possessed a firearm.
The officer approached and observed an armed individual and gave verbal orders to “drop the gun”. When the subject did not drop the weapon, the officer fired a shot, hitting the individual in the hip. The officer then retrieved the weapon, which was loaded with a lying magazine, and assisted the victim.
The injured individual is described as a 47-year-old resident of Kalamazoo. He was taken to a local hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.
Michigan State Police (MSP) have been called in to conduct the investigation to ensure it is impartial, as is the case with a shooting involving a police officer.
The officer concerned will be on administrative leave with pay while the MSP conducts its investigation, in accordance with KDPS policy.
Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be referred to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office for a review of the officer’s actions.
