Reading Half Marathon 2022: Six great pubs, cafes and restaurants to eat after the race

The Reading Half Marathon kicks off at 10.15am tomorrow morning (April 3) and those of you who are fit enough to take part will no doubt need a good meal afterwards. The grueling 13.1-mile run will see thousands of runners zipping around the city and past sights such as the University of Reading, Oracle Shopping Center and Reading Railway Station.

The route should start at Green Park and end at Madejski Stadium (now called Select Car Leasing Stadium). Traffic in the area will be disrupted for the duration of the race, which is expected to last a few hours.

Although Reading has seen cold weather conditions over the past week – including snow on Thursday (31 March) – it looks like tomorrow’s participants will have pleasant, dry racing weather. The day will start sunny, with a few clouds in the late morning and temperatures hovering between 7°C and 8°C at the time of the race.

But what about when the marathon ends and everyone needs a meal to recover? Of course there are plenty of great places to eat in the center of Reading. There are also some closer to the finish line, so you don’t have to travel too far to fill your stomach. BerkshireLive has rounded up six places below where you can grab a well-deserved bite after all that running.

The six bells

It’s both a pub and an Indian restaurant just south of the finish line. The venue has ample parking space and, in addition to North Indian cuisine on the menu, including lamb tikka and saag aloo, there are more traditional pub fare such as steak and fish and chips.

Address: Church Lane, Shinfield, Reading, RG2 9DA

Fidget & Bob

This cute little cafe serves a mix of food such as breakfast wraps, toast and hot paninis as well as pots of Asian noodles. The advantage of this place is that you can either heat the noodles in the cafe or take them home to warm up. Additionally, it also sells artisan coffees.

Shinfield arm

This traditional English pub serves Sunday roasts from midday, so perfectly in time for the end of the race. Many vegetarian and vegan options are also offered.

But perhaps most importantly, the expansive pudding menu looks delicious – from hot and sticky pecan pie to melted chocolate fudge.

Chinese garden

Maybe you fancy a sit-down Chinese meal after all that running? China Garden says it serves authentic Chinese cuisine and an “exquisite dining experience.”

As well as an a la carte menu, it also offers an all you can eat option, which seems ideal for the huge appetite that no doubt has built up.

Address: 250 Shinfield Road, Reading, RG2 8EY

The cunning man

Just east of the finish line is this thatched-roof county inn that looks beautiful and quaint. The Sunday menu looks tantalizing – rich beef and red wine lasagna and an aromatic duck salad, for example – and there are plenty of cask ales and fine wines available to quench that post-race thirst.

Address: Burghfield Road, near Burghfield Bridge, Reading, RG30 3RB

Upside-down world

A family pub that offers a varied menu. A rotisserie is on offer — with three options available — as well as a decent selection of stone-baked pizzas. Plus, burgers and fish and chips.

It also has a good-sized kids’ menu (one for under-fives and one for over-fives) which seems perfect if you’re bringing the kids after the race and need a no-frills dining venue.

Address: 387 Basingstoke Road, Reading, RG2 0JE
