Upstairs at The George, James Knappett takes pub dining to the next level in Fitzrovia | Recent news

In November, we first reported on the second draft from dream team JKS (Gymkhana, Hoppers), James Knappett (Kitchen Table) and publican Dominic Jacobs (The Running Horse) – a revamp of The George in Fitzrovia . This followed the successful opening of The Cadogan on King’s Road in Chelsea.

The Fitzrovia pub opened its ground floor offering before Christmas. This has a small menu of classic English pub fare – think Scotch Eggs and Plowmans and their burger and chips.

Now the team is about to unveil the second, more exciting stage of their work at The George. The George’s floor will include a dining room, a private dining room and an English sparkling wine bar.

Starting with the main dining room, this will serve as James’ upgrade to pub classics (the two-Michelin star chef grew up in his family’s pubs). In this menu you will find:

  • Steak Tartare with hay-smoked egg yolk, maple sourdough and black pepper
  • Scottish Langoustine Scampi with fries, tartar sauce and crushed peas
  • Sausage and mash with homemade wild venison sausage and a lightly seasoned pork shoulder sausage served with mash and onion sauce

“The menu respects the heritage of British pub culture,” says James. “While we will use exceptional seasonal and sourced ingredients, our menu will always reflect the magical simplicity of classic pub cooking.”

You’ll also find a small wine bar here serving over 80 English sparkling wines from across the country, including some very special wines from some estates that they say you won’t find anywhere else. They even transformed an original Victorian fireplace into an ice well for serving wine. Given that the Kitchen Table Bubbledogs team’s champagne and hot dog bar is no longer (the space has been taken over by the Kitchen Table expansion), we think it’s both a good reminder and an evolution of that.

There will also be cocktails up there, like the Smoked Cherry Kir Royale with Applewood Smoked Amarena Cherry and Rathfinny Blanc de Noirs; and a Gimlet with London dry gin, sheep sorrel and Granny Smith apple.

Finally, there is also a private dining area, seating up to 20 people, alongside a temperature-controlled wine cellar showcasing the pub’s extensive wine collection.

The George in Fitzrovia is the next JKS & James Knappett pub
